| | | Beckett brings incredible energy and enthusiasm to science class every day! He’s not just a hard worker, he’s a supportive teammate who lifts up those around him. During our visit from UCSB's SciTrek, he explored the world of waves with curiosity and creativity. Working with his partner, he engineered a working speaker from everyday materials, such as a glass jar. - Brian Lunardi, Science Teacher |
| Beckett is always respectful and has cool, creative ideas in art class! - Brian Downie, Art Teacher |
| Beckett has a huge heart and care about other feelings. - Jacob Pepper, Dean of Students |
| Beckett is a very talented musician and a kind and intelligent person! His abilities to play bass, sing, and get along well with others makes him a very welcomed presence in the Rock Band class. - Matt Malloy, Rock Band Teacher |
| Beckett's kindness and politeness make him a joy to have on campus. He always treats others with respect and warmth. - Marine Revel |

| | | | Reclaiming Real-World Connections: Lessons from the book "Superbloom" for Anacapa Students
In Superbloom, Nicholas Carr explores how social media, once seen as a tool for connection, is increasingly pulling society apart. He examines how digital platforms fuel distraction, weaken real-world relationships, and fragment our sense of identity. His message aligns with the work of Jonathan Haidt, who last month visited Santa Barbara for a sold-out presentation at the Arlington Theatre. Haidt’s research in The Anxious Generation highlights the rising mental health concerns linked to smartphones and social media, and together with Carr’s insights, these books provide compelling, data-driven evidence on the profound impact of digital technology on young people. As more research emerges, it becomes increasingly clear that the effects of social media on children and teens are more severe than we once thought, underscoring the urgency of fostering real-world engagement, resilience, and deeper connections beyond the screen.
For students at Anacapa School, where experiential learning is a core value, Carr’s insights serve as a reminder of the importance of real-world engagement, time in nature, and meaningful in-person connections.
Anacapa’s emphasis on experiential learning provides students with opportunities to step outside the digital world and immerse themselves in hands-on experiences. Whether through outdoor education, mock trials, science labs, or creative arts, students engage in activities that require critical thinking, collaboration, and presence, things that social media often undermines.
Carr warns that excessive online engagement can lead to shortened attention spans and surface-level interactions, making it harder for young people to focus deeply or form meaningful relationships. By prioritizing real-world learning, Anacapa fosters an environment where students actively participate rather than passively consume. Moreover, Superbloom highlights the importance of stepping away from screens and engaging with the world beyond digital distractions. When boredom strikes, instead of mindlessly scrolling, students can turn to time outdoors, whether it’s hiking, gardening, or simply taking a walk. Spending time in nature not only boosts mental clarity but also fosters creativity and problem-solving—skills that social media can dull. At Anacapa, students are encouraged to disconnect from devices and reconnect with the natural world, reinforcing the idea that some of the most valuable learning happens beyond the classroom.
As Carr suggests, the best way to thrive in a hyper-connected world is to reclaim our ability to focus, think critically, and connect authentically. At Anacapa, students have the unique opportunity to do just that, experiencing education as something real, immersive, and deeply meaningful.
