On the Thursday morning before winter break, rainy as it was, we took our students to a matinee performance of Ensemble Theater Company's production of Shakespeare's iconic play, Hamlet. The play was presented with updated costuming and references, but the language was entirely from Shakespeare's original play. The actors were excellent, using body language and special effects to clarify the meaning of their words and create a spooky tone. At one point, a "mad" Hamlet appeared on stage wearing pajamas with one the legs tucked into a sock, a bad case of bedhead, and a bag of cheese puffs. He shared his cheese puffs with members of the audience while he ranted about whether or not he could believe the ghost of his father who'd told him he needed to exact revenge. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience! |

This week, students in the Physical Science class have been working with representatives from UCSB's SciTrek to explore the fascinating world of waves. On the first day, students engaged in hands-on activities using slinkies to generate transverse and longitudinal waves, explore standing waves, and calculate wave speeds. The following day, they investigated sound propagation through various materials, including wood, plastic, and glass. Next up is an engineering challenge: using their experimental findings from day two, students will collaborate to design and construct the loudest speaker. In addition to the enriching curriculum, Anacapa students also have the opportunity to work closely with USCB students pursuing careers in science, possibly inspiring some to consider this path for themselves. |

Real-World Learning at Anacapa School
Jonathan Haidt recently spoke right here in Santa Barbara, sharing his research on how today’s students are missing out on real-world, hands-on learning and experiences. Many families and educators attended, and his message hit home: kids are spending less time taking risks, solving real problems, and learning through experience. Instead, they’re stuck in overly structured, screen-dominated environments that don’t prepare them for the challenges of adulthood or the future job market.
Luckily for the students at Anacapa, we’re actively pushing back against this trend. We believe that along with traditional classroom activities, some of the best learning happens outside of the textbook, through hands-on projects, real-world problem-solving, and meaningful engagement with the community. By providing our students with a wide range of options for experiences, we’re making sure our students gain the practical skills and independence they need for future careers. Haidt’s talk was a wake-up call for many, but at Anacapa, we've put our best foot forward in returning a variety of experiences to the traditional setting of school. We know that experiential learning isn’t just valuable—it’s necessary. And we’re committed to keeping it at the heart of everything we do. |
