Health and Wellness

As the new year begins, students often set resolutions to improve their academic performance, personal growth, and well-being. While good intentions are a great start, research shows that only about 8% of people successfully achieve their goals. To boost your chances of success, focus on setting realistic, science-backed resolutions tailored to your needs as a student.

1. Set SMART Goals
The SMART framework (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) can turn vague resolutions into actionable plans. For instance, instead of resolving to "study harder," commit to "studying for two hours daily after class using active recall techniques." Studies show that breaking goals into smaller, manageable steps increases the likelihood of achieving them.

2. Adopt a Growth Mindset
Research by psychologist Carol Dweck highlights the benefits of a growth mindset—the belief that intelligence and abilities can be developed through effort. Resolutions like "embrace challenges in my weaker subjects" foster resilience and long-term learning. When faced with setbacks, view them as opportunities to improve rather than failures.

3. Prioritizing Physical Health
Physical activity is directly linked to better academic performance. A study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that regular exercise improves memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills. Commit to simple resolutions like taking a 30-minute walk or practicing yoga three times a week. Additionally, aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night—adequate rest enhances cognitive function and emotional regulation.

4. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation or journaling, reduce stress and improve focus. Research from the Journal of Educational Psychology indicates that students who practice mindfulness report higher academic achievement and emotional well-being. Start small with a resolution to meditate for five minutes daily or write down three things you’re grateful for each night.

5. Build Consistent Study Habits
Consistency is key to academic success. Rather than cramming, implement spaced repetition and create a study schedule. Apps like Anki or Quizlet can help reinforce learning effectively.

By grounding your resolutions in scientific principles, you’ll not only set achievable goals but also develop habits that support your academic and personal growth throughout the year.

Anacapa Annual Fund

Support Our Annual Fund

With your incredible support, we’ve now raised an amazing $36,225 toward our $75,000 goal! We are so grateful for your generosity, but we’re not there yet.

We still need to raise $1,030 in smaller donations to unlock the $5,000 that was pledged by an Anacapa family last month. This means that every dollar donated will be doubled, up to $5,000! Your contribution, no matter the size, can have twice the impact.

REMEMBER: Every gift, no matter the size—whether it’s $5, $50, or $500—makes a difference. We’re aiming for 100% participation in the Annual Fund, and currently, about 60% of our families have contributed. Consider making your contribution today through our website’s donation page or by sending a check to the school.

In addition to individual contributions, we are actively seeking business sponsorships to help us reach our goal. If you or someone you know may be interested in becoming a sponsor, please refer to the sponsorship information below for more details.

Thank you once again for your ongoing support and generosity.

Together, we can achieve this goal!
